Apocrypha

Some more show bibles have appeared (or re-appeared in the case of Dark Skies) on the Internet since my original bible round-up, so I thought I’d better let you have a look at them too.

The Crow: Stairway to Heaven – Bryce Zabel
Dark Skies – Bryce Zabel and Brent Friedman
Callan – James Mitchell

And if you’d rather have dead trees (and who wouldn’t, really?) you can also find bibles in the following books:

The Making of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine
Star Trek: Phase II
thirtysomething stories
The Making of Star Trek

Though of them all, it seems that only the DS9 one is actually in print at the moment.

  1. Curiously enough, I have all four of those books. And it reminds me that there’s a related one which, while it doesn’t have a bible in it, I’d like to recommend.

The Deep Space Nine Companion (Amazon UK, Amazon US – which has a sample chapter online) by Terry J Erdmann and Paula M Block.

It sounds like your typical book about a show: an episode guide and not much else. But instead each of the 170-odd episodes gets a few thousand words of interview with the writers and producers and most of the time they’re so totally frank about what they got wrong that you believe them about what they say they got right.

It’s just engrossing: what the writers wanted to do, what they were forced to do, how a seven-year-old story developed.

This book is one of the two things that made me a fan of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. I bought it on a whim in a memorabilia show, then read it alongside the scripts of the series, and then finally watched the show!
